The Atlantic Highlands is a small and historic town in Monmouth County like none other around. While one moment you are surrounded by many farm fields of Central New Jersey, the next you suddenly find yourself climbing up steep hills that eventually lead to the highest point of the entire Atlantic Coast south of Maine. The town is surrounded on nearly every side by Navesink River, Raritan Rivers, and the Atlantic Ocean forming it’s natural boundaries while both Manhattan and Long Island are both clearly visible in the distance on a clear day. We began the photography for this wedding on New Years Day at the home of the couple as they prepared to begin their new lives together. Upstairs, the bride was done with hair and makeup and into her dress in no time as both mom and bridesmaids had to work together improvise to tie the perfect bow on the back. Meanwhile downstairs, the groomsmen shined shoes, clipped in cuff-links, and spent equally as long perfecting the knots of their bowties.
The couple’s backyard surrounded by woods and dotted with gardens was the perfect place for a quick first look and the groom could not get over how beautiful his soon to be wife was. Then, we all headed just up the road and up many many hills to the incredible Navesink Twin Lights for bridal party photos and wedding day portraits. Built in 1820, the pair of lighthouses served for years guiding ships into the New York Harbors and housed the first Fresnel Lenses ever produced before being preserved as a state park. The stone walls and sun backed hills made for beautiful photographs as everyone took in the views on this unseasonably warm winter day.
The couple then made their way to the Salt Creek Grille located just on the other side of the Raritan River in Rumson, NJ where their ceremony and reception would soon begin. A university professor and long time friend, the officiant delivered eloquent allegories and stories through his own eyes about watching the bride’s and groom’s relationship begin and take shape over many years. After exchanging rings and sealing their marriage with a kiss, the party began. A jamming live band complete with a brass section, played a mix of popular songs for dancing and songs that played a part of the relationship of the couple. Family that flew directly from South Korea for the bride finally had a chance to meet the family from grooms which quickly led to many shared stories and hugs. Many friends gave toasts that reflected on the past and gave best wishes for the future as this party continued late into the night. We wish the couple a ton of luck in 2017 and more years to come and all that awaits them in married life, we were honored to capture their wedding day.
